Entry deadline is March 1, 1997. A book may be nominated by the author, the publisher or anyone able to provide entry information. The winner will receive a $2,000 award.
The submission must be an original work written by the nominee or by the nominee as a co-author. Translations are eligible. Books that are collections of material compiled by an editor are not eligible. Previous winners may submit a new book.
Authors must have been a resident of Kansas or employed in Kansas at the time of publication and the time of nomination. For books written by more than one person, only the nominee need fulfill the Kansas residency requirements.
The Byron Caldwell Smith Award was established in 1938 by a bequest of Kate Stephens, a KU alumna who became the university's first woman professor. The award honors Professor Byron Caldwell Smith, in whose classes Stephens studied Greek language and literature as an undergraduate.
