"GREEN PASTURES: FILIPINOs IN THE HEARTLAND" AIRS OCT. 28

LAWRENCE -- "Green Pastures: Filipinos in the Heartland," a documentary produced by the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Kansas and KTWU, Channel 11, will air at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, on KTWU.

Among the family members featured in the documentary are Ascencion Cimafranca of Lawrence; Ted and Marietta Tungol of Kansas City, Mo.; and Dr. Jonas and Linda Bustos of Herington.

The documentary presents the stories of three Filipino families who immigrate to the United States in the mid-1960s and settle in the Midwest. In contrast to previous migrations from the Philippines, those who came in the 1960s were primarily skilled professionals, many of whom became involved in the health-care system, said Jerry A. Schultz, an assistant research professor with KU's Institute for Life Span Studies and film producer.

The Kansas Humanities Council provided partial funding for the project.
