Don Steeples, KU Dean A. McGee distinguished professor of applied geophysics, a Palco native who continues to farm in Palco, joined Robyn M. Harris, KU associate director of admissions and scholarships in visiting high schools in Palco, Stockton and Plainville.
In addition to talking about KU's programs and scholarship packages for undergraduates, Steeples and Harris represented KU faculty who had visited Rooks County both in May 1997 and 1998 during KU's annual Wheat State Whirlwind tours to learn more about Kansas and Kansans.
This fall, several faculty members offered books for use in high school libraries in communities they had visited.
"Some of these books are extra copies faculty members may have had. Some are editions that may have been revised recently but have basic content information that remains useful to college-bound students," Steeples said.
"Faculty members on our Wheat State visits want to keep in touch with high school students and teachers they have met," said Steeples. Steeples served as a guide on the 1997 and 1998 Wheat State Whirlwind tours designed to give newer faculty a better understanding of Kansans and their communities.
