SIX KU SENIORS RECEIVE HILLTOPPER AWARDS
LAWRENCE - Six University of Kansas seniors have received the annual Hilltopper Awards sponsored by KU's Jayhawker Yearbook. The students were chosen for their service and leadership in campus and community activities, and for academic achievement.
The 1998-1999 Hilltopper recipients are Maria Zoe Abatjoglou, Ronald C. Chen, Michael Kendall Day, Karen M. Isley, Erika Lynn Nutt and Kevin W. Yoder. The students will be honored at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at a reception in the Adams Alumni Center, and they will be recognized in the Jayhawker yearbook.
The Hilltopper Award was started in 1930 under the name Prominent Jayhawkers. After several name changes, including Hill Personalities and Big Wheels on Campus, the award became known as the Hilltopper in the late 1950s.
Nominees submitted a brief application describing their campus and community involvement, a resume, an essay and three letters of recommendation. A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 was required.
The Hilltopper selection committee includes KU faculty members, administrators, and current and past editors of the Jayhawker staff.
