UNIVERSITY BAND TO PRESENT FALL CONCERT AT KU

LAWRENCE -- The University Band will present its fall concert at the University of Kansas at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, in the Lied Center.

Thomas M. Stidham, associate director of bands at KU, is conductor of the 96-piece band, assisted by Naoya Takizawa, Tokyo graduate student.

An open-admission band, the University Band is made up of musicians from both the campus and Lawrence communities. The band rehearses at night and includes both student and non-student performers.

To open its fall program, the University Band will play the chorale prelude, "Rejoice Ye Pure in Heart," by the late Claude T. Smith, a KU alumnus. Jennifer Rogge, Lincoln, Neb., graduate student, will be the featured soloist for "Piccolo Espagnol" by James Christensen. The band's flute section will be featured for "Flute Cocktail" by Harry Simeon.

The remainder of the program includes the "Intermezzo" from the opera "Cavalleria Rusticana," by Pierto Mascagni; "Symphonic Dance No. 3 'Fiesta'," by Clifton Williams; "Sinfonia Hungarica" and "Old Time Spirit," by Robert Jager; "Introduction and Infernal Dance" by Darren Jenkins, Topeka graduate student; "With Quiet Courage" by Larry Daehn; "Air Waves" by Joseph Olivadoto; and "The Magic of Andrew Lloyd Webber," arranged by Warren Barker.

General admission tickets for the University Band concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982, SUA Office 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
