KU ALCOHOL AWARENESS PROGRAM EARNS HONORS

LAWRENCE -- The efforts of a University of Kansas student group to educate fellow students about the dangers of alcohol abuse were recently recognized.

GAMMA -- Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol -- received the National Award for Creativity in Programming of Alcohol Prevention and Awareness Education Nov. 14 at the 19th annual GAMMA/Bacchus convention in Washington, D.C. KU's Gamma chapter competed against chapters from more than 100 other colleges and universities.

In addition to a certificate, the award carried with it a $100 prize, according to Meghan Flanigan, Fairway senior and GAMMA co-chair. Flanigan accepted the award. She was accompanied by GAMMA members Jamie Harper, Littleton, Colo., sophomore, and Amy Knetter, Kansas City, Kan., sophomore.

KU's GAMMA chapter received the award for a program it sponsored in September where more than 250 new fraternity and sorority members participated in a no-alcohol lock-in from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on a weekend night at the Robinson Recreation Center on campus.

The event featured dancing, athletic contests, rock climbing and prizes donated by area merchants.
