KU FACULTY SOLOISTS AND CHOIR TO PERFORM WITH CONCERT BAND

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Concert Band has a full bill for its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in the Lied Center. Soloists for the concert are George Boberg, professor of percussion, and Vincent Gnojek, professor of saxophone. Also performing at the concert is the KU Men's Glee Club, directed by Jeffrey Carter, Lawrence doctoral student in choral conducting.

Thomas M. Stidham, associate director of bands at KU, is conductor of the 71-piece band.

The Concert Band program includes:

-- "Eagle Squadron" by Kenneth J. Alford;

-- "Concertino for Solo Percussionist and Band" by James Curnow, featuring Boberg as soloist;

-- "Resonances I" by Ron Nelson;

-- "Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Winds" by Darren Jenkins, Topeka graduate student, with Gnojek as alto saxophone soloist;

-- Part I of "Armenian Dances" by Alfred Reed, based on authentic Armenian folk songs from the collected works of Gomidas Vartabed, the founder of Armenian classical music.

The Men's Glee Club will join the Concert Band for the final portion of the program, which includes:

-- "The Testament of Freedom" by Randall Thompson;

-- "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," set by Peter J. Wilhousky, arranged by James Neilson;

-- "America the Beautiful" by Samuel Augustus Ward, arranged by Carmen Dragon.

General admission tickets for the Concert Band concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
