The program, free of charge to children ages 10 to 16, will run from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. weekdays, June 7 to July 9.
It is sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, with contributions from KU and the Lawrence community.
The program provides positive activity for children during the summer, said Dennis J. Jacobsen, a lecturer in the Health, Sport and Exercise department and the program's community liaison.
It also provides educational activities regarding drugs and alcohol, health, disease prevention and nutrition. Further, participants will explore higher education and career opportunities, he said.
"KU is one of only 30 schools that offers a math, science and computer program in addition to the regular activities," Jacobsen said.
The program offers various fitness and sport activities and field trips. Youth are supervised by KU faculty and students and are provided with lunch each day.
Transportation to and from the program is provided from several elementary schools. A bus schedule is mailed to each parent upon enrollment. A physical exam is required to participate. If a participant hasn't already had an exam, they may obtain an exam free of charge prior to the camp.
