KU JAZZ FESTIVAL TO FEATURE AWARD-WINNING ARTISTS

LAWRENCE -- The 22nd annual University of Kansas Jazz Festival is scheduled for April 15 through 17 in the Lied Center. The festival, directed by Dan Gailey, associate professor and director of jazz studies, is presented by KU's Department of Music and Dance.

Daily workshops and clinics for high school and college jazz bands and choirs will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Nightly concerts, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, will feature clarinetist Eddie Daniels with the KU Symphonic Band, Thursday, April 15; the Dave Douglas Quartet with the KU Jazz Singers and KU Jazz Combo I, Friday, April 16; and saxophonist David Liebman with KU Jazz Ensemble I and the University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One, Saturday, April 17.

Daniels, equally at home in both jazz and classical music, has recordings on GRP, Columbia and Muse Records, including the Grammy-winning "Memos From Paradise" and "Benny Rides Again," devoted to the music of Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton.

Douglas may well be the most talked about trumpeter to emerge on the jazz scene in years. With his recordings on critic's ten-best lists for the past several years, Douglas is poised to become one of the most important and influential new jazz musicians for years to come, both for his playing and his compositions.

For his KU performance, Douglas will be joined by three well-known and respected musicians of the contemporary jazz scene: saxophonist Chris Potter, who has played with Red Rodney; bassist James Genus, who is one of the busiest and most respected players in New York, performing and recording with Michael Brecker among others; and drummer Ben Perowsky, who has worked and recorded with Mike Stern, Brecker and many others.

Liebman, a saxophonist, composer, author and educator, has recorded 75 CDs and albums under his own leadership, as well as being a featured sideman on 150 more; nearly 200 of his original compositions have been recorded as well. His artistic output has ranged from straight ahead to chamber jazz; from fusion to avant garde.

In addition to the clinics and workshops with guest clinicians, Liebman will conduct a free clinic at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 17, in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall at KU.

Dick Wright, professor emeritus of music history, will be master of ceremonies for the concerts.

Reserved seat tickets for the three jazz concerts are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477; and Ticketmaster. Tickets are $12 for the public and $8 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders through the KU box offices.
