The chancellor will help students move into the remodeled Lewis Hall, 1530 Engel Road on KU's Daisy Hill, between 9 and 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 14. The chancellor will welcome students and their parents and even carry luggage into residence hall rooms. About 3,500 students will be moving into KU's student housing on that day. Classes start Aug. 19.
Saturday is the start of Hawk Week at KU, a blizzard of activities designed to make the transition to KU easy and fun for students. Students can take tours, play games, win prizes, make friends and prepare for the coming academic year. The Office of New Student Orientation sponsors the events. A schedule of events is available at http://www.ku.edu/~nsofacts/.
To satisfy students' needs for more privacy, more space, more storage and amenities, KU has been renovating its residence halls. Templin Hall was renovated in 1997. And now a $5.4 million renovation of Lewis Hall has been completed. Lewis Hall, home to 280 students, is reopening this fall after a year of renovation work.
For the renovation, large, common restrooms were demolished to make way for suites with private bath areas. The coeducational residence hall now has three different styles of suites that will offer more square footage per student. Each suite features living rooms, restrooms with vanity sinks, walk-in closets, a snack area with sink and counter, and hookups for cable TV, telephone and Internet access. Students can connect directly to the KU Ethernet backbone without tying up their phone lines. Students pay $4,829 a year, or about $540 a month, for a Lewis Hall suite and a full meal plan. Lewis Hall, named for Kansas City insurance executive Luther N. Lewis, was built in 1960. A rededication ceremony is slated for 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the KU Visitor Center. A tour of Lewis Hall and a light brunch at Ekdahl Dining Commons will follow.
