The tutors are all graduate students at KU: Donna Binns, Kristin Knight and Kara Northway from the English department and Kristen Garrison and Ann Meechai from the School of Education, said Michele Eodice writing center director.
Eodice will join the tutors in presenting a workshop on how tutoring affects teaching strategies at the Oct. 1 National Council of Teachers of English regional conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Kansas City, Mo.
The same group will conduct a panel discussion at the Oct. 29 to 31 National Conference for Peer Tutoring and Writing at Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pa. The panel will explore ways in which teachers and tutors negotiate their authority as they move from writing classroom to writing center, and the myriad implications of this shift, Eodice said.
"This is a terrific opportunity for graduate students to practice research and present at national conferences," Eodice said. "Not only will they represent the KU Writing Center and contribute something new to the field of teaching writing, they will also take another step closer to their own professional development. These grad students are the future professoriate."
The Writing Center, 4005 Wescoe, is a free service for all university students, faculty and staff. The center provides tutors who help students brainstorm, draft and edit their writing for classes, for work and for personal development. Undergraduate and graduate tutors are trained in a semesterlong course in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. They meet weekly after the course.
