LAWRENCE -- Author and educator John Brooks Slaughter will deliver the 1999 Sutton Ethics Lecture, "Matters of Ethics: Student-Athletes, Political Correctness and Other Oxymorons," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in the Johnson County Community College Theater, Overland Park.
The Walter S. Sutton Ethics Lecture Series is produced by the University of Kansas International Center for Ethics in Business, a joint effort of the KU School of Business and College of Liberal Arts. The lecture series is made possible by a gift of Betsey G. Sutton in memory of her husband, Walter, to commemorate his lifelong dedication to ethical business practices.
John Brooks Slaughter, a Topeka native who now lives in southern California, is co-author with Richard E. Lapchick of the book "The Rules of the Game: Ethics in College Sports." He is the former chair of the President's Commission of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed Slaughter to the National Science Foundation, and he served as its director from 1980 to 1982.
In 1982, Slaughter became chancellor of the University of Maryland at College Park, and, in 1988, he becamethe president of Occidental College, Los Angeles, a post he held until this past July.
Slaughter completed his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Kansas State University in 1956. He received his M.S. in engineering from UCLA and his Ph.D. in engineering science from the University of California-San Diego.
Walter Sutton, an Independence, Kan., native, was a 1939 graduate of the KU School of Business. He joined the accounting firm then known as Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., becoming managing partner of its Kansas City and Los Angeles offices. He also served on the Peat Marwick executive committee from 1954 to 1975. Until his death in 1985, he worked actively with such civic, religious and professional organizations as the Western Missouri Episcopal Diocese, the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the American Institute of CPA's.
The KU International Center for Ethics in Business works to promote individual and corporate integrity in both domestic and international business through research, service and education in ethical principles and behavior. Richard T. DeGeorge, university distinguished professor of philosophy, and H. Joseph Reitz, Koch Industries Faculty Fellow in the KU School of Business, are center co-directors.
