KU PROFESSOR NAMED TO INTERIM POST

LAWRENCE -- Diana Carlin, professor of communication studies, will be interim assistant provost at the University of Kansas, university officials announced today.

KU Provost David Shulenburger announced Carlin's appointment following a review of internal candidates at the university. She will begin Aug. 16.

"Diana Carlin has led a number of substantial efforts on this campus, including serving as chair of the strategic planning initiative to create a premier learning community for the 21st century," Shulenburger said. "She is completely immersed in the life of this university and is an ideal person for this position."

For the fall semester, Carlin will replace Kathleen McCluskey-Fawcett as associate provost for student support services. McCluskey-Fawcett will spend the fall semester in Washington, D.C., editing a book about women in university administration and writing a journal article about faculty retirement issues. In the spring, Carlin will replace Richard Givens, assistant provost. Givens, who also is a professor of chemistry, plans to conduct research on the mechanism of the photorelease of bioactive substrates from phototriggers at Los Alamos National Laboratories and apply to current research projects during his sabbatical.

Carlin joined the KU faculty in 1987 as an instructor in the Department of Communication Studies. She was later promoted to assistant professor, associate professor and last year was named professor. She also served as the department's chair in 1997-98 and, in 1996, coordinated a research project, Debate Watch '96 on the Presidential debates.

In 1998, Carlin was named an "Outstanding Educator" by the KU chapter of Mortar Board, a national senior honorary society, and also inducted into the KU Women's Hall of Fame. In 1995, she received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences' Graduate Faculty Mentor Award.

Carlin earned bachelor's and master's degrees from KU and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
