The faculty competition encourages the development of computer-based materials, including on-line courses, and their use in instruction.
IDS will work closely with the winners to make necessary purchases and to provide technical assistance during the development of the project.
Assistant provost Sandra Gautt will present the awards in a ceremony at 11 a.m. Feb. 16 in 336 Strong Hall.
This year's winners and their proposals are:
-- Catherine L. Preston, assistant professor of theatre and film. She will improve the lectures for the large 300-student Introduction to Film Medium course by creating a presentation file that utilizes still images, lecture outlines, video clips and more. The result will be a smoother lecture unencumbered by juggling multiple overheads, video tapes, slide trays and laser discs. She also will create an interactive Web site.
-- Saeed Farokhi, professor of aerospace engineering. He will develop a JAVA-based turbine engine simulation program that can be accessed via the Internet. The program will simulate individual engine components. Students will be able to analyze each component or connect them to a complete engine.
-- Christopher Haufler, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. He will use Virtual Reality software to construct and use three-dimensional images in lectures, which will replace the two-dimensional screens now used. A three-dimensional image will help students better understand the shapes and complexities of biological form.
-- John Columbo, professor and graduate director of human development. He will digitize existing and new videos, which are used in class instead of bringing infants and children into a class. The digitized clips of research done at KU would be a first step toward presenting the classes on the Internet.
-- Paul Atchley, assistant professor of psychology. He will develop experimental demonstrations for teaching scientific methodology in psychology. The demonstrations provide students with hands-on experiences followed by explanations of the methodological components of the experiments and data analysis.
