KU THEATRE TO STAGE SHAKESPEARE'S 'MEASURE FOR MEASURE'

LAWRENCE -- William Shakespeare's offbeat comedy of morals, "Measure for Measure," will be staged at the University of Kansas as part of the William Inge Memorial Theatre Series. Performances are at 8 p.m. Feb. 18-21 and 23-27 in the Inge Theatre in Murphy Hall.

"Measure for Measure" is a joint project for director Paul Meier, professor of theatre and film, and Dennis Christilles, assistant professor of theatre and film, who designed scenery, costumes and lighting for the production.

"Christilles and I have wanted to collaborate again ever since our production of 'Jesus Christ Superstar' a few years back," Meier said. "We were both drawn to the idea of doing 'Measure for Measure,' not as a big stage spectacle, but as a chamber play in which the intimacy of the Inge Theatre would be conducive to the play's closely reasoned arguments about justice and mercy, public versus private morality, and sense versus sensibility.

"This so-called 'problem play' seems to dwell on man's inability to be perfect. The theatre is set up so that there is almost no distinction between the watching space and the acting space. We are all caught up together in the play."

General admission tickets for "Measure for Measure" are on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; SUA Office 864-3477. Seating is limited. Tickets are $8 for the public, $4 for all students and $7 for senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
