KU CONCERT AND UNIVERSITY BANDS TO PERFORM JOINT CONCERT

LAWRENCE -- A joint concert by the University Band and Concert Band at the University of Kansas will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, in the Lied Center.

Naoya Takizawa, Tokyo, Japan, doctoral student, is conductor of the University Band; the Concert Band is conducted by Thomas M. Stidham, associate director of bands at KU. Composer David R. Holsinger will be the guest conductor for both ensembles.

The University Band will open the concert with "Amparito Roca" by Jaime Texidor. The remainder of its program includes "Canto" by W. Francis McBeth; "On An American Spiritual" and "Prelude and Rondo" by Holsinger; "Irish Tune from County Derry" by Percy Grainger, edited by Mark Rogers; and "The High School Cadets" by John Philip Sousa, edited by Frank Byrne.

For its portion of the program, the Concert Band will open with "Cheers!" by Jack Stamp. The remainder of the program includes "An Original Suite" by Gordon Jacob; "Fantasy on a Gaelic Hymn Song," "Adagio," and "Abram's Pursuit," all by Holsinger; and "Hands Across the Sea" by Sousa.

Holsinger did postgraduate study at KU from 1979-81 under the direction of Charles Hoag, professor of music theory and composition, and also served as staff arranger for the KU Bands and director of the Swing Choir.

General admission tickets for the KU bands concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982, SUA Office 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for all students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
