February 18 1999
A panel of faculty and staff will discuss the diverse imagery and readings of women's bodies in a number of cultural contexts. Issues to be discussed include the politicization of violence against women's bodies during times of war, the ways images of women are used to sell commodities and ideologies, and the relationship between images used in the media and self-esteem issues for women.
Panelists will include Lorraine Bayard de Volo, assistant professor of political science, and Eve-Lynn Nelson, graduate teaching assistant in psychology from Mission.
The February Sisters Forum annually honors the women whose campus activism in February 1972 was largely responsible for the establishment of the Women's Studies Program and child care services on the KU campus.
The event is free, open to the public and ends at 9 p.m. Child care is available. People needing child care may call 864-4012 to make a reservation. The Ecumenical Christian Ministries Center is wheelchair accessible.
For additional information contact Tamara S. Bryan, Overland Park graduate student, or Jan D. Emerson, secretary, in the Women's Studies Program office (785) 864-4012.
