TEXAS FAMILY ESTABLISHES EDUCATION FUND

LAWRENCE -- A retired educator and her father have donated $48,300 to establish a scholarship fund for students in the KU School of Education, Karen S. Gallagher, dean of the school, announced today.

Sylvia Mahon Allgaier and Henry G. Mahon of Richardson, Tex., endowed the Harry G. Mahon and Sylvia Mahon Allgaier Scholarship Fund with a gift of securities to the Kansas University Endowment Association. The gift honors Harry G. Mahon, Sylvia Mahon Allgaier's father, who attended graduate school at KU.

"Sylvia Allgaier's generosity means we can continue the tradition of supporting top-quality students in our school, an effort that cannot succeed without alumni like her who remember how important scholarship aid is to finishing a program," Gallagher said.

Sylvia Mahon Allgaier was born in 1936 and graduated from KU with a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1958. She received a master's degree in 1977 from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a doctorate in education administration in 1993 from the University of North Texas. After teaching elementary school in Kansas City, Kan., and Richardson, Allgaier served as director of bilingual/ESL and pre-kindergarten education programs for the Richardson school district until her retirement in 1996. She works part-time as a consultant for a regional branch of the Texas Education Agency.

The gift will be administered by the KU Endowment Association, an independent, nonprofit organization serving as the official fund-management foundation for the University of Kansas. Founded in 1891, the KU Endowment Association is the oldest foundation of its type at a public university in the United States and one of the largest.
