To open the program, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dan Gailey, KU director of jazz studies, will sing "Better Days Ahead" by Pat Metheny, arranged by Tommy Kamp. For the remainder of its program, the 11-voice choral group, accompanied by three rhythm players, will perform "Invitation" by B. Kaper, arranged by Sharon Broadley; "Rhythm-A-Ning" by Thelonius Monk, arranged by Gailey; "Summertime" by George Gershwin, arranged by Kamp; and "The Very Thought of You" by Ray Noble, arranged by Paris Rutherford.
The 18-piece Jazz Ensemble III is directed by Darren Jenkins, Topeka graduate student. For its portion of the concert, the band will play "A Long Time Ago" by Bob Mintzer; "All or Nothing at All," arranged by George Stone; "Blues for Red" by John Fedchock; "Cups and Cakes" by Jenkins; "Big Cat Blues" by Dave Hanson; and "Young and Foolish," arranged by Frank Mantooth.
The KU Jazz Ensemble II is a 16-piece group directed by Tina Claussen, Lawrence graduate student. It will play "Caravan," arranged by Fedchock; "Time in Place" by Mike Stern, arranged by Vince Mendoza; "Gush" by Maria Schneider; "Urbal Lung Comedy" by Gordon Goodwin; "Hangin' Loose" by Toshiko Akiyoshi; "Goombay Smash" by Steve Owen; and "Ruby, My Dear," arranged by Fedchock.
General admission tickets for the KU jazz concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982, SUA 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
