SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM CONCERTOS CONCERT MARCH 5

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Symphony Orchestra will present a concert of concertos at 7.30 p.m. Friday, March 5, in the Lied Center. Brian Priestman, KU professor and director of orchestral activities, is conductor of the symphony.

The program will open with "Concerto for Four Violins and String Orchestra, op.3, no.10," by Antonio Vivaldi. Soloists for the work are Sara Holmberg, Lawrence sophomore; Michalis Koutsoupides, Panayoti, Cyprus, sophomore; Alison Davis, Lee's Summit, Mo., sophomore; and James Woods, Kansas City, Kan., sophomore.

Ben Sayevich, KU associate professor of violin, and Giselle Hillyer, Lawrence doctoral student, will be the violin soloists for the performance of "Concerto for Two Violins and Orchestra" by Johann Sebastian Bach.

For "Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra" by Alexander Arutunian, Steve Molloy, Lawrence doctoral student, will be trumpet soloist. Jack Roller, Tulsa, Okla., doctoral student, will conduct the orchestra for "Second Essay for Orchestra" by Samuel Barber.

For the second half of the concert, Priestman will conduct a performance of "Symphony No. 1 in B-Flat" ("The Spring") by Robert Schumann.

General admission tickets for the orchestra concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
