KU GRADUATE DESIGNERS WIN AWARDS AT ACTF

LAWRENCE -- Two graduate students in the scenography program at the University of Kansas won prizes in the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival regional design competition held Jan. 20 through 23 at Iowa State University in Ames.

Nathan A. Hughes, Tampa, Fla., won first place in the graduate scenic design category for his set design for "Oklahoma," staged by the University Theatre in November, 1998.

William Roger Nelson Jr., Kernersville, N.C., won third place in the graduate costume design category for his costumes for the upcoming production of "Way of the World," to be staged at KU in March.

Delbert Unruh, director of the University Theatre, said the two award winners continue KU's long tradition of designers ranking high in the ACTF design competitions. Over the past 18 years, 25 KU undergraduate and graduate design students have won 57 ACTF awards.
