KU SYMPHONIC BAND TO PRESENT WINTER CONCERT IN LIED CENTER

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Symphonic Band will present its Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, in the Lied Center.

Robert E. Foster is conductor of the 75-piece band; trombone soloist for the concert is David A. Vining, KU assistant professor of trombone.

The band's winter program opens with "Tunbridge Fair," a 1950 piece by Walter Piston. Vining will be the featured soloist for the performance of "T-Bone Concerto," a 1996 work by Johann DeMeij, a contemporary Dutch composer.

The remainder of the program includes:

  • "Tenth Regiment," a march by R. B. Hall;

  • "Air Waves," a march by Joseph Olivadoti;

  • "Deus Ex Machina," a symphony for band by Keith Michel Davis;

  • "Wedding Dances" and "Epiphany" from "The Bandanna," an opera commissioned by the College Band Directors National Association. This is the premiere performance of the 1998 work by Daron Hagen, arranged by Mark Spede.

  • "Polka and Fugue" from "Schwanda," a 1927 opera by Jaromir Weinberger, arranged for band in 1961 by Glenn Cliff Bainum.

    Vining has won national and international recognition at numerous solo competitions. He has recorded on the Crystal, Musical Heritage and Newport Classics labels, and has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philly Pops Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Camerata, and is on the touring roster of the Kansas Arts Commission.

    General admission tickets for the Symphonic Band concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
