Muhammad will speak on leadership and persistence. His talk is sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs and two KU student organizations, Black Men of Today and the Black Student Union.
Muhammad has been a registered member of the Nation of Islam since March 1987. Since then he has held posts such as squad leader, lieutenant, officer in the military science academy and minister.
From June 1990 through January 1994, Muhammad was assisant and secretary to Khallid Abdul Muhammad, who was national assistant to Louis Farrakan.
David Muhammad earned a bachelor's degree in communications with a minor in black studies from the City College of New York. He served as administrative assistant to Leonard Jeffries, chairman of the Africana/Black Studies Department at City College of New York from 1981 to 1986. In addition, Muhammad was an adjunct lecturer of black studies at CCNY.
As a student, he was founder and president of the All-African Students Organization and president and executive vice president of the Day Students Government at CCNY.
Other Black History Month events at KU include a bone marrow drive to encourage donations of bone marrow by African-Americans; bowling and basketball matches; a panel discussion on African-American standards of beauty; dramatic presentations about African-American women in history; a Jeopardy game night on black history; a poetry reading; a talent show and a gospel concert.
Students are being encouraged to participate in the National Students and Youth Day of Action in defense of Affirmative Action events on Feb. 24 and in Community Service Day activities on Feb. 27.
