DOLE INSTITUTE BRINGS 2 FORMER REPRESENTATIVES TO CLASSES

LAWRENCE -- Former U.S. representatives Lou Frey (R-Fla.) and Jim Lloyd (D-Calif.) will be speaking on the virtues of public service in political science classes at the University of Kansas Feb. 16 to 18.

KU's Robert J. Dole Institute for Public Service and Public Policy has invited Frey and Lloyd to lend their expertise to class discussions and to meet with student groups.

The former legislators' KU visit is arranged through the John C. Stennis Center for Public Service's "Congress to Campus" project, jointly sponsored with the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress. The Stennis Center is based at Mississippi State University.

"We are grateful that the Stennis Center gave us the opportunity to host these former members," said Burdett Loomis, Dole Institute director. "Representatives Frey and Lloyd will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the campus."

The former legislators will speak in classes ranging from introduction to American politics to Latin American policy. In addition, they will meet with students in KU's internship program in Topeka, with student leaders at KU and with the College Republican and KU Young Democrats student organizations.

Frey served in the U.S. House of Representatives between 1969 and 1979 and he ran for both governor and senator in Florida. He practices law, writes a column and produces a weekly radio show in Orlando, Fla. As president of the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, Frey recently led delegations to Cuba and Vietnam.

Lloyd won his first election to the House in 1974 and left in 1981. A former military pilot, Lloyd continues to be active in aviation. He served on the Armed Services and Science and Technology Committee while in the House.

The Dole Institute's purpose is to foster new thinking on major policy issues, to encourage student participation and citizen involvement in public life and to provide an archive for the congressional papers of Sen Dole. Plans are being reviewed for a building to house the institute. Congress approved funds in October 1998 to complement the $6 million provided by the Kansas Legislature and private donors for the institute's construction.
