The Valentine's Day choral concert is free and open to the public. To open the performance, the Concert Choir, conducted by James Daugherty, assistant professor of music education, will sing "Ave Maria," a 1990 setting of the traditional prayer to the Virgin Mary by Ellen Keating; "Jubilate Deo," a 1990 work by Hungary's Làszlò Halmos; "Come to me, my love," a 1972 setting of the Christina Rossetti poem, "Echo," by Norman Dello Joio; "Dirait-on" from "Les Chansons des Roses" by Morten Lauridsen; and "Loving Is as Easy," "Please, Kind Sir," and "Jane, My Jane," all from "Art of the Ground Round S. 1.19/lb." by P.D.Q. Bach.
Lincoln Andrade, Lawrence doctoral student, is conductor of the Women's Chorale, which will perform "Thus Sings My Dearest Jewel" by Thomas Weelkes; "O Cool Is The Valley Now" by Thomas Beveridge; "Heart We Will Forget Him," a setting of a poem by Emily Dickinson, by James Mulholland; and "Sigh no More, Ladies," a setting of Shakespeare's song from "Much Ado About Nothing," adapted by Ralph Vaughan Williams from his own opera "Sir John in Love."
Meli Melomane, a Haitian men's ensemble in residence at KU this year, is directed by Catherine Parrill, Milwaukee doctoral student.
The group will sing "Con amores, la mi madre," a 16th century Spanish melody, arranged by Bob Chilcott; "La Rose Complète" by Morten Lauridsen, and "Michelle," a Grayston Ives arrangement of the John Lennon and Paul McCartney hit.
The University Singers, conducted by Gary Weidenaar, Lawrence doctoral student, will sing "Revecy Venir du Printans" by Claude Le Jeune; "Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind," part of the choral cycle, "When Icicles Hang," by John Rutter; "Madrigal, op. 35," by Gabriel Fauré; and "The Lighthearted Lovers," a 1983 work by Wichita native Kirke Mechem, based on the poetry of John Drydon from 1690.
To close the choral concert, the KU Men's Glee Club, conducted by Jeffrey Carter, Lawrence doctoral student, will sing "Sehnsucht, D. 656," by Franz Schubert; "Ave Maria," a 1964 setting by Franz Biebl; "Thou didst delight my eyes" by the English composer Gerald Finzi; "Down in the Valley," a George Mead arrangement of the Kentucky folk tune; and "Student Serenade" from "The Student Prince" by Sigmund Romberg, arranged by Carter. The Glee Club will close the concert with the premiere performance of "University of Kansas Fight Songs," a new arrangement of traditional songs by Carter and Geoffrey Wilcken, Lawrence graduate student.
