CHANCELLOR'S STATEMENT ON GOVERNOR'S BUDGET RECOMMENDATIONS

LAWRENCE -- "While I have not had a chance to study the details of the governor's budget recommendations, I believe he has recognized that university faculty members have serious salary needs.

"This is the first step toward a solution and the governor should be commended for taking that step.

"I wish his recommendation were larger, but I am encouraged that the problem of low university salaries is beginning to be addressed. The governor's recommendation now goes to the Legislature. We will ask the Legislature to also recognize the seriousness of the salary problems faced by universities. We look forward to making that case in Topeka."
