KU Provost David Shulenburger announced Goodyear's appointment today, Jan. 19. She succeeds William J. Crowe, who will become KU's Spencer Librarian.
"Marilu Goodyear's work as associate vice chancellor and chief operating officer of the KU libraries has been exceptional," Shulenburger said. "By promoting her, KU will continue to move forward in its quest to provide faculty, students and staff with the full range of information resources essential to the university in this era of rapidly changing technology."
Since 1998, Goodyear has served as associate vice chancellor. She is also a courtesy professor in KU's Department of Public Administration, where she teaches information policy and systems. She came to KU in 1996 from Texas A&M University, where she was associate director of libraries, and is a native of Independence, Mo.
"I am honored to have been selected for this position," Goodyear said. "I look forward to serving KU in this capacity and will work closely with Bill Crowe to ensure that the good progress achieved over the last three years continues and that the transition is smooth."
At Texas A&M, she led the technical implementation of the TexShare Cooperative Program that connected 52 public academic libraries in the state. She earned a doctoral degree in public administration from the University of Colorado-Denver, and master's degrees in public administration and library and information science from the University of Missouri. She is an expert in electronic information policy.
In July, Crowe will become the Spencer Librarian and assume direct responsibility for the internationally recognized Kenneth Spencer Research Library. He will oversee that library's extensive collection of rare books, manuscripts, archives and other original materials as well as the Dole Archive. He will also take a leading fund-raising role for KU's libraries and information services.
"After 30 years as a librarian -- the last 20 of them as an administrator -- I look forward to taking on the challenges of the next stage of my career," Crowe said. "The Spencer Library is a treasured asset for the university and for Kansas. It is an honor to assume stewardship for its collections and services. I look forward to working with the staff to build on the many decades of KU's exceptional commitment to make available outstanding collections of original records of the human experience."
In 1996, Crowe was named vice chancellor for information services and dean of libraries. He was hired as dean of KU's libraries in 1990.
Crowe will succeed Alexandra Mason, currently the Spencer Librarian. Mason recently announced her retirement plans after 40 years at KU.
As part of the reorganization of the administration of the information services area, Shulenburger said he and Goodyear will soon begin a national search for a new dean of the KU libraries. There will be no increase in the total number of senior administrative positions as a result of these changes.
