The author of more than 30 books for children, Beverly Cleary wrote seven novels from 1955 to 1984, tracing Ramona Quimby's growing-up years. Two of the books in the series, "Ramona and Her Father" and "Ramona Quimby, Age 8," were named Newbery Honor Books.
An Obie Award-winning playwright, Len Jenkin, selected, adapted, and combined short episodes from each of the seven novels to dramatize Ramona's third-grade year. His dramatization was originally commissioned and produced in 1992 by the Children's Theatre Company of Minneapolis, the largest professional company for young audiences in the United States. It has been subsequently produced by the Seattle Children's Theatre and many other companies, including Theatre for Young America in Mission.
The KU production is being directed by Jeanne Klein, associate professor of theatre and film and director of KU's children's theatre program. Scenic design is by Scott Grabau, Stockton, Calif., graduate student; costume design is by Margaret R. Gilmore, Lawrence senior; lighting design by is by Brian C. Ireland, Lawrence senior; and sound design is by Klein. An ensemble of nine cast members bring the 12 book characters to life.
"Ramona Quimby" tells about an eight-year-old who has a hard time growing up. Her father loses his job and her mother has to go back to work. Her sister picks on her. Third grade can't get much worse. Her teacher is angry with her. And her friends make fun of her. No one understands what Ramona is going through but her Aunt Bea. But Aunt Bea is getting married and moving to Alaska. Life just isn't fair!
Klein said while the stage dramatization of "Ramona Quimby" cannot include everyone's favorite episodes from each novel, Jenkin has "nevertheless captured the common problems, joys, and love expressed by a contemporary, white, middle-class family.
"Ramona and Beezus come to realize that while life may not always be fair, growing up with a loving family and friends in a secure neighborhood and constructive community does make a difference in children's lives."
