KU NAMES NEW CAREER SERVICES DIRECTOR

LAWRENCE -- A Wayne State College assistant professor has been named the new director of the University Career and Employment Services office at the University of Kansas.

The new director, Gail Rooney, will start on Aug. 23. She succeeds Terry Glenn, who went on medical leave in 1998.

"I'm excited about the opportunities at the University of Kansas," Rooney said, adding that she was interested in promoting the office's services to the students and to the university community.

Rooney comes to KU from Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., where she is an assistant professor in the counselor education program. She also coordinates the counselor education master's degree program in Northern Iowa via distance-learning media and traditional classroom experience. In addition, she was instrumental in developing the distance-learning program for Wayne State.

Previously, Rooney was director of career and counseling services at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa. She was later promoted to vice president for student development.

Her track record includes coordinating academic and career service components; presenting workshops and seminars on personal and career development, career decisionmaking, job searching and developing career related internships.

Rooney earned her doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received a master's degree at George Williams College, Downers Grove, Ill., and a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
