SCALES NAMED DIRECTOR OF OFFICE OF MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS

LAWRENCE - Alton D. Scales has been named director of the KU Office of Multicultural Affairs, formerly known as the Office of Minority Affairs. He will start in August.

Scales comes to KU from Whitehall, Pa., where he was a facilitator and consultant with the National Coalition Building Institute, a diversity training organization based in Washington D.C.

Prior to that, Scales was assistant to the associate vice president for student affairs and the director of Intercultural Services while at the University of North Texas at Denton.

"I'm delighted that KU is able to hire a person of Alton's experience and talent for this position," said James R. Kitchen, associate vice chancellor and dean of students.

When Scales left the University of North Texas, the multicultural resource library was named in his honor in recognition of his 14 years of service to the university.

He has worked on retention programs for minority, first generation and disabled student populations, and presented multicultural programs for students, staff and faculty.

Scales received a bachelor's degree in industrial technology and a master's in engineering technology from North Texas State University.
