KU GOVERNOR'S ACADEMY HONORS 39 GRADUATES

LAWRENCE -- Thirty-nine high school students and 19 teachers will receive certificates of graduation from the ninth annual Kansas Governor's Academy at the University of Kansas during ceremonies at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, in Woodruff Auditorium of the Kansas Union.

Andy Tompkins, state commissioner of education, and Karen S. Gallagher, dean of the KU School of Education, will greet the academy participants and their family and friends. State Board of Education members Bill Wagnon, Topeka, and Val DeFever, Independence, will present certificates to the participants.

The academy is designed to help high school students tap their potential to graduate. The program includes academic services and activities stressing community service as well as recreation and socializing. A teacher and two students are selected to attend the three-week session.

Funding and support comes from the Governor's Office, the Kansas State Board of Education, KU's School of Education and each participating school district.
