KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway named Janet K. Campbell, interim general manager for the past two and one-half years, to the post. Campbell was hired after a national search.
"Janet Campbell has shown outstanding leadership as interim director," Hemenway said. "With her agreement to be general manager on a long-term basis, I believe KU's excellent public radio station can achieve even greater heights."
Campbell was named interim KANU director in December 1996. She previously served as associate director of KANU and, since 1990, director of the Kansas Audio Reader Network, a KU-based broadcast reading service for the visually impaired. She came to KU in 1979 as operations manager for Audio Reader.
Campbell earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Kansas and serves as secretary of the National Association of Radio Reading Services and the Kansas Talking Books Library Association and is a member of the Lawrence Lions Club. She was selected Lion of the Year in 1995. She is a lifelong Eudora resident.
"I'm proud to be selected as general manager of KANU and pleased at the confidence expressed in my abilities," Campbell said. "KANU's staff members are extremely talented and nationally respected. I'm pleased to be part of this station."
Campbell replaces Howard Hill, who served as general manager from 1977 to 1996. Hill retired last December from the Office of University Relations.
KANU is a 100,000-watt FM station and member of National Public Radio. It serves listeners throughout Kansas with repeater stations in Atchison, Manhattan and Emporia as well as listeners in western Missouri. The station's first broadcast was in 1952.
