KU PROFESSOR TO RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS MEDAL

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas professor Ronald T. Borchardt was chosen as the 24th recipient of the Host-Madsen Medal by the Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences in The Hague, Netherlands.

The medal is the International Pharmaceutical Federation's most prestigious scientific award and is given in alternate years to an outstanding pharmaceutical scientist.

The Host-Madsen Medal will be presented to Borchardt during the opening ceremony of the 59th World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences on Sept. 6, 1999, in Barcelona, Spain.

Borchardt earned his bachelor's degree in pharmacy in 1967 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his doctorate in medicinal chemistry in 1970 from KU. After serving as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., from 1969 to 1971, Borchardt returned to KU as an assistant professor in the department of biochemistry. In the 1970s, Borchardt was promoted to his current position as Solon E. Summerfield distinguished professor of pharmaceutical chemistry. He also served as the chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy from 1983 to 1998.

Borchardt has earned several awards and honors for research and teaching accomplishments from organizations including the American Heart Association, the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, the University of Kansas, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the University of Wisconsin, the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology of Japan, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Borchardt is the author or co-author of approximately 400 scientific publications and 350 abstracts. He is the editor of six books and the series editor of "Pharmaceutical Biotechnology." His research focuses on drug design and drug delivery.
