KU DOLE INSTITUTE PLANS NATO 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE
LAWRENCE -- The Robert J. Dole Institute for Public Service and Public Policy at the University of Kansas will sponsor a conference to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Sept. 9, 10 and 11.
"NATO: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" will examine the role of the alliance during the Cold War, its adaptation to the present and its future role.
Topics of the conference will include NATO's importance for the security of the Western Hemisphere during the second half of the 20th Century, the political and economic implications of NATO today and the influence NATO will have in the world in the next millennium.
Other sponsors for the conference include the KU Center for Russian and East European Studies, KU's Office of the Chancellor, Johnson County Community College, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and the International Relations Council of Kansas City.
Sessions will be conducted in Lawrence, Leavenworth and Overland Park:
- On Thursday Sept. 9, the conference convenes at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth with three panels of experts discussing the Ukraine and NATO enlargement.
- On Friday Sept. 10, the conference moves to Lawrence to KU's Kansas Union for panels on "NATO: The New World." Experts will discuss NATO's major security issues and its relationship to European integration.
- On Saturday Sept. 11, the conference reconvenes at the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park. The theme for the final day of the conference will be "NATO: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow."
More than 20 participants, including U.S. senators, foreign diplomats, university scholars, NATO staff, military personnel and international business executives will discuss the political, economic and security issues surrounding NATO.
"Given Senator Dole's continuing role in Kosovo and the Balkans, it is most appropriate for the Dole Institute to organize this conference," said Burdett Loomis, interim director of the Dole Institute.
The public is welcome to attend all three days of the conference; a registration fee is required for the Sept. 11 event at JCCC.
