LAWRENCE -- A crime risk survey of all four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. shows that the Lawrence neighborhoods surrounding the University of Kansas are among the safest in the region and nation.
The 1999 APBNews.com/CAP (Crimes Against Persons) Index College Community Crime Risk Assessment, posted today at www.apbnews.com, ranked KU at 785th in a list of 1,497 universities. The study focused on the risk of violent crime, defined as murder, rape or robbery, in an area within 2 miles of a campus.
Among Big 12 conference universities, only the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University ranked lower than KU. Baylor University was the highest ranking Big 12 school at 284th.
Morris Brown College in Atlanta topped the national list. Three other schools in Atlanta were in the top five. At the bottom was Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass.
Rankings for other Board of Regents universities in Kansas were Wichita State University, 244th; Kansas State University, 707th; Emporia State University, 712th; Fort Hays State University, 880th; and Pittsburg State University, 1,073rd.
Rankings in the Big 12 were Baylor University at 284th; University of Texas at Austin, 349th; Texas A&M University, 405th; Texas Tech University, 497th; University of Colorado, 520th; University of Nebraska, 591st; Kansas State University, 707th; University of Missouri at Columbia, 753rd; Iowa State University, 779th; University of Kansas, 785th; University of Oklahoma, 995th; and Oklahoma State University, 1,050th.
