SURVEY ADVISORY COUNCIL TO MEET IN LAWRENCE

LAWRENCE -- Water resources on the High Plains of Kansas and issues of handling scientific data will be on the agenda for the upcoming meeting of the Kansas Geological Survey's advisory council on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 11 and 12. The advisory council will meet at the Survey's headquarters in Moore Hall on KU's west campus.

The Survey, a research and service division of the University of Kansas, studies the state's geologic resources and hazards. The Survey's advisory council is made up of 12 members from across the state who provide feedback and direction for Survey programs. Tom Collinson, publisher of the Pittsburg Morning Sun, currently chairs the council.

Lee Allison, the Survey's director and state geologist, will describe his plans for Survey programs. Allison joined the Kansas Survey in July 1999 after holding a similar position in Utah.

Among other items for discussion will be the Survey's study of the High Plains aquifer in western Kansas, a primary water source for the state, particularly for irrigation. With funding from the Kansas Water Office, the Survey is examining long-term declines in the aquifer. The meeting will also include discussion of the Data Access and Support Center, currently housed at the Survey, which provides data and other information to state agencies.
