LAWRENCE -- Three University of Kansas jazz groups will perform in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 22, in the Lied Center. Performing are the KU Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Tina Claussen, Lawrence graduate student; KU Jazz Ensemble III, directed by Fred Mullholland, Topeka graduate student; and KU Jazz Combo I, directed by Dan Gailey, director of jazz studies.
Jazz Ensemble III, a 16-piece band, will open the program, playing "As A Matter of Fact" by Darren Jenkins, "Bird Count" by Maria Schneider, "Chunga's Revenge" by Frank Zappa, arranged by Joe Boerst; "Don't Get Sassy" by Thad Jones, "Frankie's Tune" by Bob Mintzer, "Swag's Groove" by Dan Haerle, "There Will Never Be Another You," arranged by Jenkins, and "Tribute" by Bob Mintzer.
The six-piece Jazz Combo I will play a program consisting of "The Red One" and "Follow Me" by Pat Metheny, "Catch as Catch Can" by Chuck Owen, "Acknowledgement" by Nick Crane, "Jetty" by Tortoise, and "Evolve" by Kerry Marsh.
For its portion of the program, the 17-piece KU Jazz Ensemble II will play "Secret Love," arranged by Vince Mendoza; "Tell Me One Last Time" and "The Eyes Have It," both by Jenkins; "Temple Street" by Dale Wilson, "The North Rim" by Doug Bristol, and "Urbal Lung Comedy" by Gordon Goodwin.
General admission tickets for the jazz concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for all students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
