LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas School of Law will host a celebration at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Uncle Jimmy Green Memorial Statue.
The bronze statue depicts the first dean of the law school, James Woods Green, with a student. It was created by Daniel Chester French, an eminent U.S. sculptor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries best known for his statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. French's sculptures are showcased around the country in parks, universities, public buildings, memorials and museums.
The Green statue stands on Jayhawk Boulevard in front of Lippincott Hall, the building known to law students and alumni as Old Green Hall. This building housed the law school from 1905 until the new law school building was dedicated in 1977.
The celebration will take place in front of the statue. Paul E. Wilson, professor emeritus of law, will speak about the statue's history, and Michael Davis, professor of law, will read excerpts from the original dedicatory remarks.
