KU TO HOST CARNIVAL OF CHEMISTRY FOR KIDS

LAWRENCE -- Once again, it's time for the slime.

The University of Kansas chemistry department is preparing to host the sixth annual Carnival of Chemistry. The carnival, sponsored by KU and the American Chemical Society, is full of hands-on projects and demonstrations aimed at making science learning fun for elementary school kids.

The carnival is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at Malott Hall. Admission is free.

Malonne Davies, adjunct assistant professor of pharmaceutical chemistry and carnival organizer, said the ever-popular slime pit would be just one of more than 20 activities featured at the carnival, which has a theme this year of "Celebrating Polymers."

Among the other activities scheduled are:

-- The "Spectra-pult," a catapult that teaches kids about energy levels and the energy spectrum.

-- A chance for kids to build and decorate the world's largest chain polymer model

-- A chemical demonstration of "The Wizard of Oz," which won last year's American Chemical Society Phoenix Award for best chemical demonstration.

Davies said the carnival is a great way to introduce young children to the fascinating world of science.

"I don't think you can start kids too young in terms of learning things about the natural world around them," she said.

Parking is free and available in lot 90, Naismith Drive and 18th St.; and lot 62, Sunnyside Ave. and Illinois St. Participants can also park in lots near Memorial Stadium.
