KU CONCERT TO PRESENT EARLY CHRISTMAS MUSIC

LAWRENCE -- "In dulci jubilo: Early Music for the Christmas Season" will be presented by the University of Kansas Oread Consort and Collegium Musicum at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, in Bales Organ Recital Hall. Simon Carrington and Paul Laird are directors of the Collegium Musicum while Carrington directs the Oread Consort.

Laird said the program includes both choral and instrumental music from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, much of it relatively unknown, and is planned as "a refreshing change from the usual bombardment of 'music for the holiday season' we hear from early November until New Year's Day."

The program opens with the six-member Oread Consort performing a chant sung in medieval England for first vespers on Christmas, "Veni, redemptor gencium."

The remainder of the concert will include:

-- "There is no rose of such virtue," an anonymous 15th century English tune; "Thys endere nyghth I saw a syghth," an anonymous 16th-century English work, and "Virgen Sancta" by Francisco Guerrero, performed by the Oread Consort.

-- "Hodie Christus natus est," an eight-part work by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, performed by the Collegium Musicum Vocal.

-- "Der Tag, der ist so freudenreich" by Eccard, performed by the Collegium Instrumental with the women of the Collegium Musicum Vocal.
