GROUP TO PRESENT JAPANESE FOLK MUSIC

LAWRENCE -- The Kaze Shamisen Troupe of Tokyo will present a free concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall on the University of Kansas campus.

The performance, titled "Tsugaru Shamisen," will feature the shamisen, a three-stringed instrument, accompanied by flutes, drum, and singing. Music will include traditional folk music of Tsugaru, the northernmost district of Honshu, Japan's main island, as well as a fusion of contemporary and traditional music.

The six-member troupe has visited 13 cities in six countries on its current tour. It is touring the United States with the sponsorship of the Japan Foundation and the Consulate General of Japan in Kansas City, Mo. Its KU appearance is sponsored by the International Theatre Studies Center, the Department of Music and Dance, and the Center for East Asian Studies.
