KU PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE TO PREMIERE RILEY OCTET

LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas Percussion Ensemble will premiere "Eye Irascible" for percussion octet by Lawrence composer Steve Riley for its fall concert Friday, Nov. 19. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. at Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

Riley's newest work won third place in the 1999 composition contest sponsored by the Percussive Arts Society. In 1988 he won first place in the contest with his composition "Declarative Stances," also for percussion octet.

George Boberg, KU professor of percussion, will direct the ensemble, which will also play "Fanfare for Tambourines" by John Alfieri, "Collidescope" by Jared Spears, and "Batik" by James Campbell.

The recital is free and open to the public.
