KU'S BUDIG AWARD PRESENTED TO PAINTING AND DRAWING PROFESSOR

LAWRENCE -- Tanya E. Hartman, assistant professor of painting and drawing at the University of Kansas, has been named the 1999-2000 recipient of the Gretchen Van Bloom Budig Teaching Professorship awarded by the KU School of Fine Arts.

The $5,000 Budig Award was established in 1996 by former KU Chancellor Gene A. Budig in honor of his wife, Gretchen.

The one-year Budig professorship rotates through the three departments in the School of Fine Arts. Recipients are selected by faculty committees in each department. Previous recipients are the late Michael E. Ott, professor of art; Patrick Dooley, assistant professor of design; and Deron McGee, assistant professor of music theory.

In announcing Hartman's selection for the award, Carole Ross, interim dean of the School of Fine Arts, called the Budigs "most generous in helping recognize excellence in teaching in fine arts."

"I am thrilled Tanya Hartman has been chosen by her colleagues to receive this teaching award," Ross said. "She is an exceptional teacher and consistently receives outstanding evaluations from her students. We are indeed fortunate to have Hartman as a member of our faculty."

Since she joined the KU faculty in 1997, Hartman has taught courses in painting and drawing, has conducted independent studies, and has created new courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. She has also directed a graduate seminar.

A 1994 graduate of Yale University with a master of fine arts degree in painting, Hartman received her bachelor of fine arts degree in painting and printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has also done post-graduate studies in painting and printmaking at the Stockholm School of Art under a Fulbright Research Grant.

Prior to coming to KU, Hartman taught at Housatonic Community Technical College, Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, New York University's Gallatin Division, Norwalk Community Technical College, and the Snug Harbor Cultural Center. She was also a teaching assistant in painting and the printshop manager at Yale's School of Art.

Hartman is affiliated with and has an annual showing at the A.I.R. Gallery in New York City. Her work has also been exhibited throughout New York, Pennsylvania, California, Maryland, Florida, Connecticut, Kansas, North Carolina and New Jersey. This year, exhibitions of her works are scheduled at the A.I.R. Gallery, Salina Arts Center, and the ARC Gallery in Chicago.

She has received awards from the KU Center for Teaching Excellence and, for the past two years, has received CTE faculty research grants.
