LAWRENCE -- The University of Kansas vocal jazz program will be spotlighted when the KU Jazz Singers and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the Lied Center. Dick Wright, KU professor emeritus of jazz history, will be master of ceremonies.
Kerry Marsh, Great Bend graduate student, is director of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, which will open the fall program. The choir will sing such selections as "Night and Day" by Cole Porter, arranged by Tommy Kamp; "Und Wussten's die Blumen" by Robert Schumann, arranged by Marsh; "Splanky" by Neil Hefti, arranged by Margareta Jalkeus; "In the Gloaming," a traditional tune arranged by Jonathan Brooke; "Green Dolphin Street" by Kaper and Washington, arranged by Benny Chawes; and "Open Invitation" by Darmon Meader and Lauren Kinahan.
For the second portion of the program, the KU Jazz Singers, directed by Mitos Cox, Lawrence graduate student, will sing such tunes as "Invitation" by Kaper, arranged by KU alumnus Jesse Krebs; "On the Sunny Side of the Street" by Jimmy McHugh, arranged by Cox; "Stolen Moments" by Oliver Nelson, arranged by Darmon Meader; "Blood Count" by Billy Strayhorn, arranged by Cox; "Africa," arranged by Randy Crenshaw; "Skylark" by Johnny Mercer, arranged by Marsh; "Afro Blue" by Mongo Santamaria, arranged by Cox; "Stella by Starlight" by Young and Washington, arranged by Phil Mattson; and "My Favorite Things" by Rodgers and Hammerstein, arranged by Randy Crenshaw.
General admission tickets for the vocal jazz concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
