LAWRENCE -- Ten University of Kansas freshmen are receiving top honors as Chancellors Club Scholars for 1999-2000 tonight at the annual meeting of the Chancellors Club at the Lawrence Holiday Inn Holidome.
The Chancellors Club, the major-donor organization at the Kansas University Endowment Association, finances the renewable scholarships, which recognize National Merit finalists who have outstanding high school records. Five students from Kansas high schools and five from out of state have been added to the roster of Chancellors Club Scholars.
Kansas recipients for 1999-2000 are Charles Z. Henry, Concordia; Jennifer Marcee Iverson, Prairie Village; Nicole Mohlman, Esbon; Katherine Pacey, Manhattan; and Justin Ward, Belle Plaine.
Out-of-state recipients are Brad Green, Desloge, Mo.; Hanna Lee, Tulsa, Okla.; Christopher Mellem, Lee's Summit, Mo.; Katie Mitchell, Solon, Iowa; and Joseph Pull, Colfax, N.D.
KANSAS
CLOUD COUNTY
From Concordia
CHARLES Z. HENRY, son of Samuel A. and Barbara J. Henry, plans to triple
major in music theory, psychology and mechanical engineering. He is
interested in conducting research in musicology.
He said he was impressed by the resources and distinguished faculty at KU and the opportunities offered there. He lives in Grace Pearson Scholarship Hall.
At Concordia High School, Henry participated in Scholar's Bowl, debate, forensics, Drama Club, the Solar Bike Team, tennis, marching band and pep band. His honors included District III Honor Band, North Central Kansas League Band and Kansas Regents' Honors Academy.
He received the Will B. Anderson Memorial Scholarship in engineering, the N.T. Veatch Scholarship in engineering, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship, the Marie P. and Frederick Sealy Scholarship, the Robert M. Carey Scholarship in mechanical engineering, the KU Presidential Scholarship and the Electrathon America Scholarship.
JEWELL COUNTY

NICOLE MOHLMAN, daughter of David and Julianne Mohlman, plans to major in
human biology and to take courses to fulfill pre-medicine requirements.
She said she was attracted to KU not only by scholarship offers but also by
the university's reputation as a culturally diverse, nationally competitive
institution in both teaching and research. She lives in Templin Hall.
Mohlman graduated from White Rock High School in Burr Oak, where she was Student Council president, a band member, choir accompanist, an Upward Bound math and science student and a Hugh O'Brian Ambassador. She also participated in Quiz Bowl, IMPROV Troupe, volleyball, cheerleading, forensics, peer counseling, tutoring and the all-school play. She was a National Honor Society member, a Kansas Honor Scholar and a Kansas Governor's Scholar. She also was a RadioShack Tandy Scholar Outstanding Student, Outstanding Science Student, Outstanding Senior in Math and Science, and 1999 Kansas Junior Miss Second Runner-Up and Scholastic Award recipient. In addition, she received the Kansas Board of Regents Award, the President's Education Award and the Bausch and Lomb Science Award.
Her scholarships include the W. Harold Otto Merit Scholarship, the Dane G. Hansen Scholarship, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship, the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship, the G.H. Burkhart Scholarship, the Aid Association for Lutherans Scholarship, the National Association of Secondary School Principals' Leadership Award, the Kansas State Junior Miss Scholastic Scholarship, the Kansas State Junior Miss Second Runner-Up Scholarship, the Greg Garman Memorial Scholarship and the White Rock Student Council Scholarship.

From Prairie Village
JENNIFER MARCEE IVERSON, daughter of Patrick and Terry Iverson, is majoring
in aerospace engineering. She lives in Templin Hall.
She graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School, where she was active in debate and forensics and was a member of the National Honor Society. She also donated her time to the Laubach Literacy council where she helped teach people to read.
Her scholarships include the Watkins-Berger Scholarship, the J.L. Constant Scholarship in engineering, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship and the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship.
RILEY COUNTY
From Manhattan
KATHERINE PACEY, daughter of David and Carol Pacey, is majoring in chemical
engineering with an environmental option. She also is interested in
studying Spanish.
She said that although the offer of scholarships was a major factor in her decision to attend KU, she also was impressed by the scholarship hall community, the beauty of the campus, the band program and the Honors Program. She lives in Watkins Scholarship Hall.
Pacey graduated from Manhattan High School, where she was a member of marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, basketball pep band, orchestra and National Honor Society. She was a Student Council representative and participated in Scholars Bowl and Science Olympiad. Her high school honors included first place in the Regional Science Olympiad Examination, first place in school in the American High School Mathematics Examination, first place in state in the National Spanish Exam, state and class awards in the State of Kansas Scholarship Tests and Glenn's Music Low Brass Award.
Her scholarships include the Will B. Anderson Memorial Scholarship in engineering, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship, the James C. and Catharine C. Combs Scholarship in chemical engineering, the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship and the Watkins-Berger Scholarship.
SUMNER COUNTY

JUSTIN WARD, son of Alan Ward and Nancy Ward, is double majoring in
computer science and English. He lives in Stephenson Scholarship Hall.
He said he was impressed by the well-rounded education offered at KU as well as the diverse opportunities offered by the Lawrence community.
Ward was valedictorian of his class at Belle Plaine High School, where he was active in forensics, school plays, SADD, National Honor Society and Technology Students Association (TSA). He was a national finalist for TSA Extemporaneous Speech and a Presidential Scholar semi-finalist.
His scholarships include the J. L. Constant Scholarship in engineering, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship, the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, and the Chase Scholarship.
IOWA
From Solon
KATIE MITCHELL, daughter of Mark and Theresa Mitchell, is double majoring
in anthropology and Spanish.
She said she chose KU because of the scholarship support offered. She lives in McCollum Hall.
Mitchell graduated from Solon High School, where she participated in basketball, soccer, drama, madrigal and chamber choirs, chorus, band and set building and design. She also was a member of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band and a classroom volunteer. She was a State of Iowa Scholar, a National Honor Society member and V of I Community Credit Union Outstanding Student of the Arts.
Her scholarships include the W. Harold Otto Merit Scholarship, the Solon Music Auxiliary Scholarship, the Solon Dollars for Scholars Scholarship and the Solon Mayor's Scholarship.
MISSOURI

BRAD GREEN, son of Becky Mason and Gary Green, is majoring in engineering
physics.
He said he was attracted to KU because of its size and its wide range of programs, as well as his scholarship offers. He lives in Templin Hall.
Green was valedictorian of his class at North County High School in Bonne Terre, Mo., where he participated in Science Club, History Club, Scholars Bowl and the mock United Nations and Constitutional Convention. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Missouri Scholars Academy. During summer 1998, he attended the University of Missouri Physics Department Internship Program.
He received the N.T. Veatch Scholarship in engineering, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship, the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship and the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship.
From Lee's Summit
CHRISTOPHER MELLEM, son of James and Kendall Mellem, plans to double major
in computer science and business.
Mellem said that KU's scholarship offers attracted his attention but that the quality of KU's professors and the beauty of the campus convinced him to attend the university. He lives in Templin Hall.
He was salutatorian of his class at Lee's Summit High School, where he was Student Senate secretary, a peer tutor, captain of the varsity soccer and basketball teams, president of the National Honor Society, president of Future Business Leaders of America and Academic All-State in basketball. He was listed among the top 100 high school students in Missouri.
He earned the N.T. Veatch Scholarship in engineering, the Long Scholarship in engineering, the KPMG Peat Marwick Accounting Scholarship, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship and the USAA Member Dependent Scholarship.
NORTH DAKOTA
From Colfax
JESEPH PULL, son of Tim and Mary Pull, is double majoring in history and
political science.
He said he was attracted to KU by the campus atmosphere and facilities, as well as financial aid offers. He lives in Pearson Scholarship Hall.
Pull graduated from Richland High School, where he participated in speech, debate, Student Congress, choir, jazz choir, Academic Team, yearbook staff and American Legion Boys' Nation. He was an Eagle Scout and State Speech and Debate Champion. He earned the NDHSAA Distinguished Student Scholarship.
He received the Vee Flinn Scholarship, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship, the Stella Wolcott Aten Scholarship and the Wayne O. Wallace, M.D., Memorial Scholarship.
OKLAHOMA
From Tulsa
HANNA LEE, daughter of Cindy Lee, is majoring in Chinese and considering an
additional major in economics.
She said that she first considered KU because it offered a major in Chinese but that her final decision to attend was due to scholarship offers. She lives in Templin Hall.
Lee graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, where she was president of the Chinese Club, an International Baccalaureate Candidate, a committee board member of the National Honor Society and a representative at the National and State Conventions of the National Honor Society. She spent her senior year of high school in Beijing, China, through the School Year Abroad (SYA) program, where she studied Chinese folk dancing and was co-editor of the 1998-99 SYA China yearbook.
She received the Vee Flinn Scholarship, the Cameron Kroh Reed Memorial Scholarship, the Clyde A. Babb Scholarship, the Stella Wolcott Aten Scholarship, the Ellis D. Bever Scholarship and the W. Harold Otto Merit Scholarship.
