KU WIND ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM 'MUSIC FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM'

LAWRENCE -- "Music for the New Millennium" will be performed by the University of Kansas Concert Wind Ensemble in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, in the Lied Center. Robert E. Foster, KU director of bands, is conductor of the 64-piece wind ensemble, assisted by Naoya Takizawa, Tokyo graduate student.

To open the program, the wind ensemble will perform "Fanfare for a New Millennium," a 1998 work by Robert E. Foster Jr., KU alumnus and band director at Haskell Indian Nations University and Eudora High School.

The remainder of the program includes:

-- "Pineapple Poll," arranged by Charles Mackerras.

-- "Night Song for solo euphonium and wind ensemble," a 1998 work by Ron Nelson. Matt Hemenway, Lawrence graduate student, will be euphonium soloist for the work.

-- "Threnos," a 1998 work by Daniel Bukvich.

-- "The Florentiner," written by Julius Fucik and edited by John Bourgeois.

-- "Odyssey," a 1999 fanfare by Zamir Bavel, KU professor of computer science.

-- "Petite Symphonie in B-flat, op. 90," by Charles Gounod, edited by Frederick Fennell.

-- "Morning Star" by David Maslanka.

-- "Rollo Takes a Walk," a 1985 work, also by Maslanka.

-- "D. R. III's Honnormarsj" by Erling Mostad. General admission tickets for the Wind Ensemble concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982, SUA Office 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 for students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
