U.S. ARMY TUBA/EUPHONIUM QUARTET TO PERFORM AT KU

LAWRENCE -- The U.S. Army Tuba/Euphonium Quartet will perform at the University of Kansas at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Swarthout Recital Hall. The performance is part of the Visiting Artists Series sponsored by the KU Department of Music and Dance.

Originally formed in 1981 to explore the expanding repertoire of tuba/euphonium music, the quartet's unique instrumentation has made it one of the U.S. Army Band's most popular ensembles. The group was reformed in 1998 as an innovative ensemble for the 21st century with the goal of introducing new compositions and arrangements for the tuba/euphonium quartet.

Members of the quartet, which was featured at the 1998 Colonial Euphonium and Tuba Institute and the Army Band's 16th annual Tuba/Euphonium Conference, are Sgt. 1st Class Bob Powers, Virginia Beach, Va., euphonium; Sgt. 1st Class Don Palmire, Penney Farms, Fla., euphonium; Staff Sgt. Jon Voth, Hutchinson, tuba; and Staff Sgt. Mike Forbes, Lock Haven, Penn., tuba.

For the KU recital, the quartet will play a widely varied program ranging from classical works by Haydn, Debussy and Tchaikovsky to big band tunes, spirituals and contemporary works.

The tuba/euphonium recital is free and open to the public.
