LAWRENCE -- An elected faculty, staff and student governance advisory council at the University of Kansas has approved a resolution urging the Kansas Board of Education to rescind its vote to downplay the teaching of evolution.
The resolution adopted by the University Council also calls on local school boards to follow science education standards in effect before the state board's recent action.
The resolution expressed concern that the state board's action eliminates "from the mandatory science teaching and testing standards key aspects of scientific method including contemporary treatments of biological evolution and the history of the universe." It may leave Kansas students "unprepared for science education at the university level," the council's resolution stated.
