LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas students will kick off construction of a Habitat for Humanity House with a nail-driving ceremony Oct. 15.
The project, dubbed the "House that Greeks Built," is the fall philanthropy of KU's Panhellenic Association and Interfraternity Council. Students will do a bulk of the work as directed by skilled workers. The project will take about two weeks.
The ceremony will take place at noon Friday, Oct. 15, at the construction site, 1623 Wedgewood Drive. The site is in east Lawrence.
Fund-raising for the project began last fall. Approximately $40,000 was raised through donations and events such as a campuswide garage sale, a bowl-a-thon, and a benefit concert.
The project was the idea of Sarah Heimovics, Fairway senior and the Panhellenic Association's vice president for community service and philanthropy. It has evolved into one of the KU Greek community's largest projects. Because of the efforts of the hundreds of dedicated Greek college students, a family will now have a home, Heimovics said.
