KU WIND ENSEMBLE TO PRESENT A SALUTE TO SIR MALCOLM ARNOLD

LAWRENCE -- The Concert Wind Ensemble will perform its fall concert at the University of Kansas at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the Lied Center. Robert E. Foster, KU director of bands, is conductor of the 64-piece wind ensemble, assisted by Naoya Takizawa, Tokyo doctoral student in conducting.

For its season opening concert, the wind ensemble will perform "A Salute to Sir Malcolm Arnold," the famed British composer. Plans for Arnold to visit KU this fall had to be changed because of his poor health, Foster said.

The program will open with Arnold's "Peterloo Overture." The ensemble will also play his "Fanfare for Louis, 1970," for solo trumpets, and "Four Scottish Dances, op. 59."

The remainder of the program includes "First Suite in E-flat for Military Band" by Gustav Holst; "Handel in the Strand" by Percy Grainger; "Eagle Squadron" by Kenneth Alford; "Old Wine in New Bottles" by Gordon Jacob; four Old English tunes, arranged for Wind Instruments, including "The Wraggle Taggle Gipsies," "The Three Ravens Begone," "Dull Care!" and "Early One Morning"; and "Royal Air Force March Past" by Walford Davies, edited by Foster.

General admission tickets for the concert are now on sale in the KU box offices: Lied Center, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall, 864-3982; and SUA, 864-3477. Tickets are $5 for the public and $4 students and senior citizens. Both VISA and MasterCard are accepted for phone orders.
